Best Time to Drive Adelaide to Kangaroo Island

Spring (September–November) is magical on KI — wildflowers, newborn wildlife, mild weather. Summer is busiest and hot. Autumn is quiet and beautiful. Winter sees whales and penguins in close rotation; rain is frequent. KI's 2020 bushfires affected much of Flinders Chase; regeneration is remarkable to see.

Local Tips for the Adelaide to Kangaroo Island Drive

Book the SeaLink ferry weeks or months ahead in summer — it fills. Taking a car is expensive (~$225 return); many travellers use local tour operators from Penneshaw. Most of KI's best attractions are in the far west (Flinders Chase) — allow at least 2 days, ideally 3. Fuel is significantly more expensive on KI than the mainland.

Driving Tips

Southern Expressway M2, Main South Road, then Cape Jervis Road to the SeaLink ferry terminal (45-minute crossing to Penneshaw, ~$216 return for vehicle). Yankalilla is the last cheap fuel before the ferry. Fuel on Kangaroo Island is 20–30 c/L above Adelaide — fill up fully on the mainland. The 2019–20 bushfires severely affected Flinders Chase; the region has largely recovered. Book ferry well in advance for peak holidays.
