Best Time to Drive Alice Springs to Uluru

April to September is the cool window — summer temperatures reach 45°C and make walking dangerous. Winter nights are freezing in the desert but days are perfect. Sunrise and sunset at Uluru are the hero moments.

Local Tips for the Alice Springs to Uluru Drive

This is a 5.5-hour drive on straight desert highways — boring but manageable. Fuel at every roadhouse; range is critical. Entry to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is $38/person/3 days. Climbing Uluru has been closed since 2019 — respect Anangu cultural wishes. Accommodation at Yulara is the only option and expensive — book months ahead.

Driving Tips

Classic Red Centre run — Stuart Highway to Erldunda, then the Lasseter Highway west to Yulara. Erldunda Roadhouse is the last major fuel stop before the Lasseter; Curtin Springs (cattle station roadhouse) is the only fuel after that before Yulara. All three are expensive — typically 30–50 c/L above Alice Springs — but necessary. Summer (December–February) regularly tops 45°C and the road absorbs heat that eats tyres. The Lasseter has single lanes with few overtaking opportunities; road trains should be passed with patience.
