Best Time to Drive Darwin to Jabiru

May to October is the dry season — the only reasonable window for road access. June–August has cool nights. Peak wildlife viewing is September–October as animals concentrate around remaining water. Many Kakadu roads close during the wet season (November–April) due to flooding.

Local Tips for the Darwin to Jabiru Drive

Kakadu park pass ($40/person/7 days) required. The Arnhem Highway is fast and sealed all the way; Kakadu interior roads vary (some 4WD only). Fuel is cheaper in Darwin than at Kakadu Highway Inn. Accommodation books out months ahead in dry season — Jabiru's Aurora and Cooinda Lodge are the main options. Never swim except in designated pools.

Driving Tips

Arnhem Highway east from Humpty Doo. Corroboree Park and Mary River Roadhouse are the two roadhouse fuel options; Jabiru itself has a single station. Wet season (November–April) closes most of Kakadu's back roads and some 4WD-only tracks stay shut into June. Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls are 4WD-only and dry-season-only. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit every waterway in the park — don't approach water's edge anywhere. NT fuel prices at Jabiru run 30+ c/L above Darwin.
