Places of Interest Between Melbourne and Apollo Bay

Torquay & Bells Beach (Beach)

Surf Coast capital. Surf World Museum, Rip Curl's head office, and Bells Beach itself (where the Rip Curl Pro is held each Easter). Torquay town has the best country-town op-shopping in Victoria.

5 min off Great Ocean Road

Anglesea (Beach)

Sleepy family beach town halfway between Torquay and Lorne. The Anglesea Heath has rare wildflowers Aug–Nov; the town itself has a free golf course with kangaroo hazards — you literally share fairways with mobs of roos.

On Great Ocean Road

Aireys Inlet & Split Point Lighthouse (Historic Site)

The 1891 red-and-white 'Round the Twist' lighthouse sits on a coastal clifftop. Free parking, tours available. Aireys pub (The Lighthouse Inn) is the classic beer-with-a-view.

On Great Ocean Road

Lorne (Town)

The halfway pearl — 45km of beach, Art Deco town architecture, and the Erskine Falls and Sheoak Falls rainforest walks 10 min inland. The Lorne Pier for sunset, the Lorne Arts Theatre for culture.

On Great Ocean Road

Kennett River Koala Spotting (Wildlife)

The single most reliable wild-koala spotting on the Great Ocean Road. The Grey River Road gum trees above the Kennett River caravan park host dozens — park at the caravan park, walk 200m, look up.

On Great Ocean Road

Cape Otway Lightstation (Historic Site)

Australia's oldest surviving mainland lighthouse (1848). WWII radar bunkers, Aboriginal cultural centre, and lighthouse climbs. Wild koalas in the gums along the 12km access road are a near-certainty.

Best Time to Drive Melbourne to Apollo Bay

Autumn and spring for the best driving (empty road, mild temperatures, no bushfire risk). Summer traffic is brutal — the Great Ocean Road is single-lane for long stretches and crawls behind caravans. Winter is wild and dramatic with Southern Ocean storms but many attractions close or reduce hours.

Local Tips for the Melbourne to Apollo Bay Drive

The Great Ocean Road is Australia's most scenic drive but also its twistiest and slowest. Budget 3.5–4 hours Melbourne to Apollo Bay with no stops; realistically 6–7 with. Fuel in Torquay or Apollo Bay — no servos on the coast road in between. Take the inland route home via Colac and the Princes Highway if you want to save 90 minutes.

Driving Tips

The Great Ocean Road begins at Torquay. The coastal drive is slow by design — tight curves, 80 km/h limits, frequent lookouts. Apollo Bay fuel is expensive; at least 10 c/L above Geelong. Fill in Geelong before you commit to the coast road. Peak summer weekends the road backs up behind campervans between Lorne and Apollo Bay — leave early (before 8 am) or late (after 4 pm) to avoid the worst. The faster inland Princes Highway route via Colac saves 30 minutes but misses the point.
