Mount Gambier Blue Lake (Natural Attraction)

The volcanic crater lake that turns cobalt blue each November and fades to grey-green by April. Free to view, well-signed from the Princes Highway. Umpherston Sinkhole a five-minute drive away is equally striking.

On Princes Highway route

Port Fairy (Town)

Awarded 'Most Livable Community' worldwide in 2012. Whaling-era cottages, the Griffiths Island lighthouse walk with its mutton-bird colony (October–April), and the best Irish-heritage streetscape in Victoria.

On Princes Highway route

Twelve Apostles & the Great Ocean Road (Natural Attraction)

If taking the coastal route via Warrnambool, the Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge are non-negotiable. Allow an extra half-day. The 8km inland limestone stacks are most dramatic at sunset.

Coastal route only (+3 hours)

Ballarat (Historic Site)

Last major stop before Melbourne on the direct Western Highway route. Sovereign Hill, the Eureka Centre and the Art Gallery of Ballarat — Australia's oldest regional gallery — are all 15 minutes off the highway.

5 min off Western Highway

Murray-Sunset National Park (National Park)

If taking the Sturt Highway alternative, stop at Hattah-Kulkyne or Murray-Sunset for the pink lakes near Underbool. Seasonal colour (cooler months are pinker) and near-empty roads make it a proper outback break.

Best Time to Drive Adelaide to Melbourne

October–November is peak: Coonawarra in budburst, wildflowers in the Grampians, warm coastal water for the Twelve Apostles stop. Summer is hot inland (38°C+ through Bordertown), cool on the coast. Avoid the Melbourne Cup long weekend — the Western Highway clags up with horse-racing traffic.

Local Tips for the Adelaide to Melbourne Drive

The direct inland Dukes/Western Highway route saves 2 hours over the coastal Princes route. Fuel is cheapest at Horsham (VIC) and Bordertown (SA). Most travellers stop overnight at Mount Gambier if doing the coastal route, or Horsham/Ballarat if inland. Dusk through the Coorong means kangaroos — daytime driving only is wise.
