Best Time to Drive Canberra to Wollongong

Autumn in the Southern Highlands (April–May) is beautiful if you detour via Robertson. Avoid heavy fog on the Illawarra Highway / Macquarie Pass in early morning winter — visibility can be very poor. Summer is busy on Wollongong's beaches but otherwise the drive is pleasant year-round.

Local Tips for the Canberra to Wollongong Drive

The Illawarra Highway via Robertson is scenic but slow; the alternative is M31 to M1 via Campbelltown — faster but less interesting. Fuel is cheaper in Goulburn and Wollongong than in any of the Southern Highlands villages. Macquarie Pass is tight and winding — avoid if towing a large caravan. Nan Tien Temple's vegetarian buffet is a good budget lunch.

Driving Tips

Federal Highway to Goulburn, then the Illawarra Highway east through Moss Vale and down Macquarie Pass. Macquarie Pass is 10 km of tight hairpin descent — take it slow in wet weather and be patient behind trucks. Moss Vale is the last reliable fuel stop before the descent. Wollongong fuel is in line with NSW regional averages and typically below Sydney metro. Friday evenings out of Canberra and Sunday evenings out of Wollongong are the peak congestion windows.
