May to October is the dry season — when swimming holes are safe and accessible. Wet season brings saltwater crocodile migration into freshwater pools; many swimming areas close. Early dry season (May–June) has fullest waterfalls.

Local Tips for the Darwin to Litchfield National Park Drive

Litchfield is Darwin's favourite day trip — 90 minutes to Florence Falls. Free park entry. Arrive early (before 9am) to beat tour buses, especially in peak season. Buley Rockhole is usually less crowded than Florence. Check Parks NT website for current swimming conditions — occasionally saltwater crocodiles are removed and holes reopened.

Driving Tips

Stuart Highway south, then Litchfield Park Road west via Batchelor. Batchelor is the last reliable fuel stop — no fuel inside the park. Litchfield is a 2WD-friendly alternative to Kakadu, with swimming-hole waterfalls (Florence Falls, Wangi Falls, Buley Rockholes) that are typically crocodile-free (rangers check annually). Wet season (Nov–April) closes some access roads; dry season (May–Oct) is peak.
