Best Time to Drive Hobart to Cradle Mountain

November to April is the realistic window. Autumn Fagus colour (late April to early May) is extraordinary. Summer has the longest days. Winter brings snow and demands serious gear — magical but challenging.

Local Tips for the Hobart to Cradle Mountain Drive

This is a 4-hour direct drive — but the Lake Highway via Great Lake is more scenic than the Midland Highway. Carry snow chains in winter (legally required at higher elevations). Park entry fee is $35/person for 24 hours. The Dove Lake shuttle bus runs Oct–Apr — private cars can only go as far as the visitor centre in peak season. Book lodging months ahead.

Driving Tips

Midland Highway up to Launceston, then west through Deloraine and Sheffield. The final stretch to Cradle Mountain is tight, winding, and often foggy — leave plenty of time in the last 50 km. No fuel at Cradle Mountain itself — Sheffield is the last reliable fill. Tasmanian fuel runs 10–15 c/L above mainland averages; fill in Hobart before leaving. Winter brings snow and ice above 800 m; check ParkWatch and consider chains between June and September.
