Best Time to Drive Launceston to Cradle Mountain

November to April is the reasonable window — snow is common at Cradle Mountain even in summer. Autumn (April–May) brings the Fagus (deciduous beech) turning gold — Australia's only native deciduous tree. Winter is magical with snow but requires serious gear.

Local Tips for the Launceston to Cradle Mountain Drive

A Cradle Mountain park pass is required ($35 per person for 24 hours or $80 for a family). The shuttle bus is mandatory to enter the park proper — park at the Visitor Centre. Dove Lake circuit (6km, 2.5 hrs) is the classic walk; Crater Lake is a wilder alternative. Wombats are everywhere at dusk. Book accommodation at Cradle Mountain months ahead.

Driving Tips

Bass Highway A1 west to Deloraine, then the Mole Creek Road (C136/C137) south-west. Deloraine is the reliable urban fuel. Mole Creek has one small station; Cradle Mountain itself has no fuel. Park Pass ($60 holiday pass) required. Summer peak (Dec–Feb) and winter snow season both pack accommodation — book early. Dove Lake circuit (2-hour walk) is the iconic photo.
